Frequently Asked Questions

Lash Extensions

What are lash extensions?

Lash extensions are not the same as strip lashes. They are semi-permanent, synthetic lashes that are glued to your natural lashes through the use of lash adhesive. They are placed on individually, either on each lash or every other lash, depending on the look you are going for.

How is it different from a lash lift?

A lash lift doesn’t use synthetic lashes, it is the augmentation of your natural lashes. A perming solution is used to lift and curl your lashes, making them appear longer and more shapely. You can also get a tint to make your lashes darker, giving a faux mascara look.

How do I prepare for lash extensions?

Before your appointment, make sure that there is no eye makeup or excess product such as moisturiser around your eye area. The area should be as clean as possible.

If your go-to mascara is waterproof, you should avoid this a couple of days before your lash extensions. Otherwise, this may interfere with the application.

Furthermore, you shouldn’t come to the appointment wearing contact lenses as these cannot be in place during the treatment. This is because it will make it harder in the event that anything gets in your eye during the treatment.

Can I wear contact lenses with lash extensions?

Yes, once the lashes have been applied, you can wear contact lenses again. However, if you notice any irritation when wearing the contact lenses, we recommend getting them professionally removed as it might not be the best option for you.

What are infills?

Infills are the re-application of lashes in areas that may have experienced lash fall-out or gaps. They are recommended to keep your lashes looking full and fierce, avoiding looking ‘gappy’.

How often should I get infills?

As humans, we have between 90-120 natural lashes on our upper lash line. However, these will shed daily, an average of 2-5 lashes. We recommend booking an appointment for infills every 2-3 weeks.

Can I wear mascara with lash extensions?

You don’t need to wear mascara with lash extensions, as they basically act as mascara anyway. With extensions, your lashes will look fuller, darker and longer.

We recommend avoiding mascara altogether, especially with the more natural, lighter lashes as this will add weight to the lashes and give a higher risk of them falling out.

Avoid waterproof mascara completely as this can ruin your lash extensions and will be very hard to get off, resulting in lashes falling out prematurely.

How do I take care of my lash extensions?

  • Don’t pick at them – Picking at your eyelashes may weaken them and even make them fall out. This will result in bald patches along your lashline, and an infill would be necessary to restore them.

  • Brush your eyelashes every morning and night – Use a clean spoolie brush to brush through your lash extensions. This will keep them in order and looking neat. It can also break down any pollen or dust on the lashes which can lead to infection.

  • Sleep on your back on the first night – Sleeping on your back is recommended for the first night as your eyelashes are more susceptible to bending or misshaping if you sleep on your front or your side.

  • Avoid steam rooms, sunbeds and saunas for at least 48 hours – Moisture should be avoided in the first 24 hours as it won’t allow the adhesive to dry fully. Places such as steam rooms, sunbeds and saunas can bring on sweat which may loosen the lashes. With that said, vigorous exercise should be avoided before the lashes have dried.

Permanent Makeup

What is permanent makeup?

It is the micro-implantation of coloring pigments into the skin for aesthetic purposes to enhance, contour, and outline facial features. It is also a valuable procedure for camouflaging scars, burns, skin pigmentation variances caused by vitiligo, correcting some facial irregularities, or to further enhance facial rejuvenation and post-operative treatments.

Is permanent makeup similar to tattooing?

It has some of the same qualities, yet it is very different. Only specialists in micro-pigmentation can perform this procedure on the face; tattoo artists cannot. Permanent-Line uses only the techniques, tools, and pigments specifically designed for micro-pigmentation procedures, making it safe, sterile, and painless. Permanent makeup clinicians also use effective topical anesthetics that are not allowed for use by tattoo artists. Permanent-Line uses instruments much more delicate in design that provide natural-looking results.

Is permanent makeup a safe procedure?

At Shine and Glow, the procedures are performed under sterile conditions, using only disposable needle cartridges and with digitally controlled implantation device. There are no long-term side effects; short-term effects may include some redness, swelling, and tenderness. There are no known allergic reactions to pigments.

Is there any discomfort associated with the procedure?

Unlike in tattooing or some other type of permanent makeup salons Shine and Glow uses topical anesthetics that are highly effective to be applied to the treated area which significantly reduces discomfort. Typically, patients will report a tickling sensation with little or no discomfort during or after a procedure has been performed.

Please be aware when booking a lip procedure, if you have ever had an outbreak of fever blisters at any point, you must consult with your doctor for a prescription of Valtrex or similar product prior to your procedure.

What kind of healing time is involved? Is any care required after the procedure?

Some swelling and redness can be expected for up to 24 hours following a procedure. Cold compress helps to reduce any swelling around the eye area. The treated area must be kept clean. No makeup should be applied for several days. Some skin peeling and lightening of the applied color is normal. If any additional adjustments are desired, these will be made during your follow-up appointment. Regular routines usually can be resumed immediately after the procedure. However, tanning or swimming should be avoided for a few days. Normal healing times is between four to seven days.

How long does permanent makeup last?

Gradual fading can be expected for all micro-pigmentation procedures. This varies among people and is dependent on the specific shade used, personal care routine and sun exposure. Most colors last three to five years, although some may not fade for as long as 10 years. Pe riodic touchups are recommended to maintain the desired look. You can also choose to change colors of your permanent makeup. For instance, a nude lip color can be modified to a peachy pink or a brown eyeliner to a black or navy hue.

Is the procedure covered by insurance for restorative procedures?

Depending on your health plan, some procedures are reimbursable (i.e., if a scar is the result of an accident or cancer treatment).

How long should I wait before I can have permanent makeup applied after Botox, injectables, chemical peels or laser treatments?

Generally speaking, we recommend to wait at least one week before we apply any permanent eyebrows, eyeliner, or lip liner/color. It may be necessary to wait a few more weeks after laser resurfacing or chemical peel.

Can I have Botox after my eyebrows are permanently feathered and enhanced?

We recommend to wait a few days to let the eyebrows heal completely before Botox is injected. A brow lift should not significantly alter the shape of a permanent eyebrow.

Can I have Restylane or Juvederm injected around my mouth after a permanent lip liner procedure? Will it change the look of my lips?

Restylane or Juvederm can be used to further enhance the fullness of your lips and to diminish the appearance of lines around the mouth. The lip liner will not “run” or feather into the vertical lines around the lips.

What is a Touch-up appointment?

During the initial procedure (first application), the tattooed area(s) will be saturated with as much color as possible. Due to swelling, there may be some areas where the tissue will no longer allow pigment to be implanted. Those areas will show less color after healing and may need another visit to be filled-in (a touch-up). Because everyone’s tissue reaction is different, some clients will need a second visit while others will not. First, the tattooed area must heal before a refinement procedure can be performed. It is best to wait 4 to 8 weeks for complete tissue healing and color stabilization. Once the desired results are achieved, the client can keep the color looking fresh with a maintenance visit every few years.
